Overview

A public office under the aegis of the Ministry of Technology, Communication and Innovation. In operation since February 2009, the date of entry into force of the founding section of the Data Protection Act 2004 .

The Data Protection Act 2004 was repealed and the Data Protection Act Protection Act 2017 was enacted on 15 January 2018 in accordance with the principles contained in the General Data Protection Regulation . The head of the office is the Data Protection Commissioner. The Commissioner has a wide range of enforcement powers that help him to ensure compliance with data protection principles. This office aims to protect the privacy rights of individuals. An annual report is submitted each year to the National Assembly of Mauritius in terms of Section 55 of the Data Protection Act.
